What is accreditation?
For traditional and non-traditional learning institutions to receive accreditation—the mark that institutions have met
recognized educational standards in their academic programs—they must meet specific requirements and be evaluated by
an official review board. The official review board guarantees that the courses and degree programs as a whole are valid.
What are the accrediting boards in the U.S.?
There are six regional accrediting boards in the United States:
- MSA--Middle States Association
- NASC--Northwest Association of Schools & Colleges
- NCA--North Central Association of Colleges & Schools
- NEASC--New England Association of Schools & Colleges
- SACS--Southern Association of Colleges & Schools
- WASC--Western Association of Schools & Colleges
Why is accreditation important?
Enrolling in an accredited school means that you can apply for federal financial aid and that your degree is legitimate in
the eyes of employers, professional associations, and other schools.
What kind of financial assistance is available?
There are a number of ways to pay for undergraduate and graduate education -- federal financial aid, private scholarships,
grants, employer tuition reimbursement plans, active military tuition assistance, and Veterans Administration Benefits.
To be eligible for federally sponsored financial aid (grants or loans), prospective students must enroll in an accredited
university. Before dismissing financial aid as an option, prospective students should know that federal financial aid
requirements differ for undergraduate and graduate programs. If you were previously ineligible for undergraduate aid, you
may now qualify for graduate level aid. In addition, individual universities offer a variety of financial aid options, including
scholarships or discounts specific to that particular university.
Finally, many companies and organizations provide full or partial tuition reimbursement for qualified employees. Check with
your Human Resources department to learn about possible education benefits.
How do I apply for federal financial aid?
Most universities have full-time admissions staff dedicated to answering questions about financial aid options. After you have
selected a university, contact the university's admissions department to learn more how to apply for financial aid.
What do associate, bachelor, graduate, and doctoral degree levels mean?
An associate's degree is a two-year program that either prepares students for a career after graduation or allows them to
transfer into a bachelor's degree program.
A bachelor's degree is typically a four-year program that either prepares students for a career after graduation or allows them
to apply to a graduate degree program. However, if you have an associate's degree, your credits may apply to a bachelor's
degree and will lessen the time it takes to achieve this degree.
A graduate degree, also known as a "Master's degree," is usually a 2-year program that either prepares students for a career
after graduation or allows them to apply to a doctoral degree program. A Masters of Business Administration (MBA) is the
most commonly sought degree by career-minded adults working in business.
A doctoral degree, also known as a "Doctor of Philosophy" (PhD), is usually a 2-3 year program that either prepares students
for a career after graduation.
What is Interdisciplinary Studies?
Interdisciplinary Studies is a broadly focused degree program that allows you to develop competency in several disciplines. A
broad-based education is often the best preparation for today's labor economy, in which adults make frequent career changes
and need a wide-base of knowledge. A wide range of institutions have Interdisciplinary Studies programs, including University
of Virginia, Ellis College, University of California at Berkeley, Georgia College and State University, among others.
